High Capacity Lithium Ion Battery Cathode and Anode Materials Based on Nano-composites

We recently developed nanocomposite materials for next generation of high capacity, fast charging, long lifetime and low cost lithium ion batteries. These nano-composite materials are:

  1. Nano Sulfur (n-S) / CNT nanocomposite cathode material
  2. Nano Silicon (n-Si) / CNT nanocomposite anode material

Compared with lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) and graphite currently used in the lithium ion batteries today, our nanocomposites have following advantages

  1. Higher energy capacity due to n-S and n-Si active materials
  2. Faster charging: The small particle size of active materials enhances their reactivity and reaction kinetics. Highly conductive CNT network in the nano-composites ensures fast charge transfer between active material particles and battery current collector.
  3. Longer lifetime: The small particle size of active materials limits particle volume change and stress, preventing particles from fracture after repeated lithiation / delithiation cycles. The CNT network in our nano-composites reinforces and maintains structural integrity of electrodes during battery operation.
  4. Our nano-composites have lower cost because they are transition metal (cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni)) free.
